Secret Stitcher registration - It's time to sign up
for our annual Holiday luncheon surprise. At our Holiday meeting in
December, people unwrap their handmade gifts from their Secret
Stitchers to the oohs and aahs of the rest of the group. The items
vary across all the needle arts from tatting to cross stitch, from
ornaments to needlecases. Now is the time to be a Secret Stitcher.
In September, you will be assigned a person as your “Secret Stitchee.”
They will provide some guidelines to help you pick out something to
make that you know they will love.

Mon.
8/25/08, Wed. 8/27/08, and Thur. 8/28/08
Once again we are demonstrating in the Creative Arts
building during the State Fair. Not only do you get a free
ticket to the fair that day for sitting and stitching for 3 hours
with your friends, but you also get to meet and greet new people as
they walk by and tell them all about St. Paul Needleworkers.
This is a lot of fun and if you ask people who have done this
before, they will tell you that the time flies by. We have
been discovered there by local stitchers who became happy new
members. We already have many people signed up for this and
but are still looking for one person to complete the following
shifts - Monday, 3-6, Wednesday 3-6, Thursday 6-9. Please
contact
SPN if you are interested. If you are at the fair those
days, be sure to stop by our booth in the Creative Arts building to
say hello. If you have already signed up for a shift, you will
receive more info and your free ticket before the fair begins.

Outreach
Bookmarks are Back!
St. Paul Needleworkers will again be stitching
bookmarks for literacy. At the September meetings, patterns,
banding, fabric, and fibers will be available to all those who want
to participate in this worthwhile endeavor. Stitched bookmarks
can be turned in at any October or November meeting. For each
bookmark that is turned in, the stitcher will get a chance to win a
prize that will be awarded at the December luncheon. If you want to
stitch bookmarks over the summer, that's great. Bring all the
summer stitched bookmarks to the September meeting and then enter in
the prize drawing.
Save the Date - February 7, 2009 - 12:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. - Dakota
County 4-H Stitching Day
St. Paul Needleworkers will be teaching three
stitching projects at the Dakota County 4-H building on Saturday,
February 7. As of this newsletter, the exact projects have not
been determined, but the projects will all be done with a threaded
needle. Three lead teachers and at least nine classroom
helpers will be needed for this day. If you are interested in
helping with this event, please
e-mail SPN. Teachers and helpers will receive the
needlework project they will teach by this fall, so there will be
plenty of time to familiarize yourself with the project.

Kissing Pillow Update
As of September 23, 2007, we had 570 Kissing Pillows
stitched, sewn, stuffed and ready to go and were waiting for the
date of the actual deployment. Additional information and final
totals for what is needed will be announced at upcoming meetings.
Please continue to stitch pillows in your spare
time. What we don't need here we can always ship to Texas to be
distributed to active duty service families through the Yellow Rose
EGA Chapter.
Thanks to all who have helped and will continue to
help our efforts for the troops.
Needlework Kits--Alexandria House
In November 2007, 110 needlework kits were collected
and delivered to Alexandra House, a shelter for battered women and
their children!

Stitch-a-Month
These handouts are
a fundraiser from the Vintage Stitchers (San Francisco Bay Area) and
available to our members. Please do not make copies as that will
violate our copyright agreement.
July -
no Stitch-a-Month, we're too busy with potluck and stash
reallocation
August
- Loara Standish Stitch - year 4 month 1
It's unknown whether Loara Standish (daughter of
Miles) invented this stitch or just stitched what she was
taught, but it's from her sampler (now in a museum outside
Boston). This stitch can be done reversibly or not and is
a combination of upright crosses and triangles.
September - Four Sided Stitch- Year 4 Month 2
Now we start the miscellaneous stitches. This
stitch can be done pulled, unpulled, over one or two threads
or more, on evenweave or aida, in vertical or horizontal
rows, or in diagonal rows. It can be used as a
finishing edging, as a border, or as a band. Some of
you must have done some four sided stitching in your past.
Bring your examples in for us to admire.
As
always if you have stitched examples of these stitches please bring
them to show, and any comments from the crowd are always welcome.
